The Gut-Skin Connection: Why Pooping Equals Radiance

This year I ventured into new health territory: colonics. I've known about them for years, of course, but I always stayed comfortably away from this therapy. While I didn't know exaclty how they worked, I knew it involved a hose and basically pooping in the presence of someone. Enough reason to stay away, right?!

But eventually my curiosity won. After 41 years of living on this planet, even with my nearly perfectly clean diet nowadays, it seems very probable that there could be some old stuff stuck in there. I booked a package of three sessions, figuring, if I'm going to do this, I am committing!

My first session was more or less what I expected, with more discomfort and a longer duration than I may have hoped for. Water goes in, pressure builds, all is released. (All through very sanitary tubing, mind you). They repeat the process. Water in, building pressure, and release. Again. And again. And again. Each time I hope it's the last, until I realize, this is just going to go on until the time is up. Luckily, all discomfort ended along with the treatment. I felt great after- very light!!

My next two sessions were similar, however I noticed this time, that the water filled in a lot higher- almost all the way to the bottom of my rib cage. Apparently, the more sessions you do, the more old stuff is cleared out, so subsequent colonics are able to "get in deeper." It was definitely different.

So what have I noticed after my session of three? Extra glowy skin! And it makes total sense. If our insides are backed up, naturally our skin can become dull and sluggish, rather than exuding the radiance we hope for, and tend to turn to topical products for.

So, let's get to what's really going on here!

How the Gut Affects Skin

  1. Toxin Build-Up – When digestion slows, toxins can accumulate. Your body may try to eliminate these toxins through the skin, leading to breakouts, dullness, or irritation.

  2. Inflammation – An unhealthy gut can release inflammatory compounds that travel through the bloodstream and trigger skin flare-ups, including acne, rosacea, and eczema.

  3. Nutrient Absorption – Poor bowel regularity can impair absorption of vitamins and minerals like zinc, vitamin A, and antioxidants—essential for glowing, healthy skin.

  4. Microbiome Balance – A thriving gut microbiome helps regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation. Imbalances can affect both digestion and skin health.

Your skin is basically a tattletale for your gut. That’s right—what’s happening in your intestines doesn’t stay in your intestines. Welcome to the gut-skin axis, where poop, microbes, and a little inflammation all conspire to show up on your face. When your digestion hits the snooze button, toxins can pile up, and your skin may decide to throw a breakout party to get them out. Meanwhile, your gut can release inflammatory mischief-makers that zoom through your bloodstream, causing acne, redness, or that weird rash you can’t explain. And if you’re not pooping regularly, your body might be missing out on the nutrients it needs to keep your skin glowing—think zinc, vitamin A, and antioxidants, basically your complexion’s VIP guests.

Regular bowel movements are basically your skin’s best friend. Good poop = happy gut = happy face. Enter colonics, aka colon hydrotherapy, i.e. the spa day your intestines didn’t know they needed. While science hasn’t fully raised a glass to colonics yet, anecdotal reports say they can reduce bloating, boost energy, and sometimes even clear up skin that’s been staging a revolt. Of course, colonics aren’t magic—they work best alongside fiber, hydration, probiotics, and all the other things crucial to a well functioning gut.

The takeaway is simple: your colon health matters more than you might think. Supporting regular bowel movements and a balanced gut can help reduce internal toxins, regulate inflammation, and improve nutrient absorption—all of which directly benefit your skin. Colonics may offer an occasional boost, but lasting results come from consistent gut care through diet, hydration, and lifestyle habits. When you prioritize your digestive health, your skin reflects it, becoming clearer, more radiant, and resilient. In short, a well-functioning gut is not just about comfort—it’s a foundational step toward truly healthy skin.

As always, I highly recommend working with a functional medicine practitioner to get accurate gut testing with personalized protocols. I did it this year and got a wealth of information as well as a multi-month gut health plan including probiotics, digestive enzymes, mucosal support, and an herbal parasite cleanse. Because radiant skin is most certainly an inside job.

Cheers to smooth moves and even smoother skin!
